Pride fo Baghdad - Brian K. Vaughan & Niko Henrichon

After a bombing raid in Baghdad, some American soldiers found four lions wandering the city, freed from the zoo but unsuited for survival outside. Vaughan wrote this graphic novel based on that story, and then embellished it to pursue questions about freedom and captivity. The lions (and other animals) speak to each other, trying to understand what's happening and how to find food in this totally unknown environment.

It's a fairly short book but is haunting and, well, sad. The illustrations are beautiful but I couldn't help thinking of "The Lion King" when I read it.
