Amulet Book One: The Stonekeeper - Kazu Kibuishi
I heard about Amulet from Penny Arcade, and since Kibuishi is also the guy behind the Flight anthologies which I've enjoyed, I decided to order it and give it a try. Kibuishi has a nice half-sketchy style, influenced by manga but not quite as extreme.
The plot involves a family (mom, girl, boy) moving back to an old family mansion after their dad died in an accident. They discover Great-Grandpa Silas' workshop, and shortly thereafter weird things start happening. Emily discovers a strange amulet that talks to her. Then mom is captured by a weird octopus creature, and Emily and Navin go after her.
The world they end up in is filled with bizarre flora and fauna, and there are allusions to a much bigger back-story that is yet to be filled in.
It was a relatively cheap book ($10 for about 185 pages) and one that I doubted our local library would get, so I bought it online. But I'm not sure how many volumes the entire story will be, or how long before the next volume comes out. Still, it's a good start to a tale and I enjoyed the imagery.
