The Barefoot Serpent - C. Scott Morse

This is another comic book I got from Top Shelf. It's a story about a little girl in Hawaii, bookended by a short biographical story about Akira Kurosawa. The style of the artwork is loose and stylized, and it works well to capture the innocence of the kids but also makes some of the serious stuff more shocking. It's not really a traditional "And then this happened" sort of plot; it's more of an environmental thing, conveying a mood through a vignette.

I'm not really familiar with Kurosawa's films myself, but Morse patterned many of the characters in his tale after elements from Kurosawa's repertoire. As such, I enjoyed the book but not as much as I may have if I knew the source material better.
