Preludes & Nocturnes (Sandman, Book I) - Neil Gaiman et al.
(been around for a while; finally checked out from library)
The Sandman has been touted as a groundbreaking work in the comic book genre, the best alternative comic, and other such lofty things, so I decided I should give it a read. The writing was pretty good and I found the storyline to be interesting and original; the Sandman as a personification of Dream makes for some curious possibilities. However, the art (while not being typical muscle-bound superheroes) was still a little too comic-book-ish for me. I preferred Dave McKean's renderings (he did the covers for the Sandman series but not the artwork inside). Will I read more of the Sandman series? Yes. Did I get what all the hoo-hah is about? Sort of. Maybe. I've got a late start on the whole comic book/graphic novel thing, so I'm trying furiously to catch up now.
