Coraline - Neil Gaiman
(found at Waldenbooks)
This book is filed in the "Young Adults" section at Waldenbooks, and I decided to check it out to see what Gaiman (and illustrator Dave McKean) would do for a kids' book. The back had a quote by Lemony Snicket, which I thought was clever, and Diana Wynne Jones felt it would "nudge Alice in Wonderland out of its niche at last," but I doubt it—could anything do that? Despite that bit of hype, however, I did enjoy the book. Coraline has some creepy exploring to do in a nightmarish world, and some of the things really are frightening. There's also a cat that figures in the story, and Gaiman captures its personality perfectly. It's a quick read, and good for a few laughs and shivers.
