Ridley got this as a Christmas present, and it's a lovely book. The stone soup story is a traditional folktale, and I've usually seen it set in Europe somewhere. The idea is that a stranger (or group of strangers) offers to make stone soup for people who aren't willing to share, and teaches them a lesson in generosity. This particular version is set in China, with three monks representing deities from Chinese folklore. The watercolor illustrations are beautiful and capture the spirit of the tale.
