Skulduggery Pleasant 2: Playing with Fire - Derek Landy

Skulduggery nodded. "So, you married, or anything? Do I hear the pitter-patter of tiny evil feet?"
"I will destroy you."
"You're still upset about that time I made you explode, aren't you? I can tell."

I just finished the second Skulduggery Pleasant book, which picks up not too long after the conclusion of Book One. As I'd expected, the second book jumps straight into the action and pretty much hangs on the entire time. Baron Vengeous has broken out of jail, and is out to resurrect the Grotesquery, a sort of Frankenstein's monster that is supposed to have the ability to bring back the Faceless Ones. (Basically, causing the end of the world as we know it.)

Skulduggery and Valkyrie (as Stephanie is now known) are out to stop him, which also involves fighting vampires, Springheel Jack, and a weird American guy named Billy-Ray Sanguine who can slip through walls and earth. Oh, and Stephanie's family is having a family reunion.

There's less character development here, as Skulduggery and Valkyrie both seem to be more established in their personalities, but there's still plenty of the humor. I don't think I enjoyed this one quite as much as the first, but there were some colorful characters that made it fun. The names still bug me, though.

On to Book Three...
